WE'RE THE FIFTY PERCENT

And most women have to fight every inch of the way to hang on to the little they've got. Just finished the miniseries from the eighties about the partition of India. Who took it in the teeth on both sides. The women and the kids, as usual. And it just sank in. While the Viceroy and the politicians, mostly male were drawing lines on maps Edwina Mountbatten, born to privilege, was down in the blood and the muck trying to clean up the mess. Isn't that the way it goes. They break it. We get stuck with trying to put the pieces back together.

I've been thinking a lot about getting involved in some real activism--something that will speak to more than just our few (I wish it were more) blog readers and my handful of Facebook friends. this "Right-Wing Anti-Woman" explosion has given me cause for thought. In every demographic group to which I belong, I am a grain of algae in a small pond. Except one: I am a woman. There are a hell of a lot of us out there.

Then I asked myself, "What can a group of mobilized women do?" And I thought about the women of Ireland whose efforts basically brought peace and prosperity to that country for the first time in centuries.

Hopefully they won't break it to the point that there's nothing left to put back together.

There are a lot of us out here...a strong and smart voice like yours is an asset to us all.

During the our little proxy wars in Central and South America there was one group in most countries who could gather in public and didn't get hassled as badly as many of the others. It was the mothers, wives and sisters of the "the disappeared" and they helped change their countries. They wouldn't shut up and they wouldn't go away.

I'm not sure what our little group can do. Could we organize a chat. Maybe talk about what we've been reading, how it relates to women and their families? The courage those seen as the least among us can be awesome.
