ANOTHER BOOGEYMAN

I didn't realize that merely being exposed to the president was so dangerous. Apparently the prez is planning to give a speech Tuesday morning that will be available to be shown to students in their classrooms. The subject? Stay in school and study hard. Sounds pretty harmless doesn't it? I mean it's not like the drop out rate has been falling and it's even worse for minority students, right?

To hear some of the conservative talking heads and panicing parents tell it the Visigoths are at the gates, the Mongols are ready to sack the city and their favorite hobgoblins are back under the bed ready to bite their ankles. One mother the regional cable network was in tears and looked like she'd been that way for awhile. Either that or she had a plentiful supply of chopped onions in the kitchen.

Good Lord woman. Do you honestly believe that one speech shown over a TV is going to undo all your parenting? Are you admitting in public that you have so little influence over your own children that one speech is going to undo everything you've taught them?

Oh, and incidently every person I've seen interviewed was white. Nah, that's just a coincidence. And I have some really prime farmland in southe eastern Oregon for sale. Just the other side of Fossil. :-)

Excellent post, Jackie! Yeah, the white, conservative parents here in Texas are really up in arms over this, and it chaps my hide. The Dallas Morning News came out with an editorial saying broadcasting the speech is a GOOD idea, and nothing to fear. I read a lot of comments. We have plenty to fear, but it's not the speech being broadcast. Several parents said the real message by not broadacasting the speech is that "We don't have to listen to anyone with whom we disagree!" Now there's a good message, isn't it? The suburban school district that my kids attended here is taping the speech and playing it the next day to kids who have permission to see it. This is so depressing.

Once again, this country is slipping into the dark ages- I thought it was beginning to "evolve" (pun intended)

What a perfect opportunity the Obama presidency has been for the party that took over the south by simply "suggesting" that they were the go-to group if you were a white person who intended to cling to the notion of white superiority. Interesting how the GOP can crawl inside people souls and assure them that their secret (or not-so-secret) hatreds will be pandered to by the "conservatives."

Mr. Obama is the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, you pig-headed jerks...GET THE F**K OVER IT!!!!

I had the chance to watch the president's speech this morning. The only thing radical about it is how conservative his message was. Work hard, do your homework, pay attention in class. My my such a dangerous message.

I'm not holding my breath waiting for the hysterics to go public with "um, gee, I guess maybe we over reacted just a teeny, tiny bit."
