Photo Not Friday

I will be too busy this Friday to post much of anything, I imagine...

But I'm posting this picture in honor of some things into which I will soon have a lot more time to invest.

This pic isn't from this year, but I've had the unusual pleasure of the company of his kind all during this past winter. They have helped get me through some bleakish months...

Is that a grosbeak? Very nice contrast between the fence, the bird surveying his/her domain and the ivy. Does look like he thinks he owns the place doesn't he.

Wonderful photo! You took this? I didn't know this bird so grabbed one of my older field guides off the shelf, (Peterson's Fourth Edition) and there he was, right on the cover!

Virginia--yes, I took the photo. It was actually taken in May of 2009. That was back when I only saw these birds in the spring and summer. But I had a big noisy flock of them consume mass quantities of sunflower seed from my back yard feeders over the entire winter of 2010-11. It is an evening grosbeak...I affectionately call them "clown birds," because they are so comical with their serious-looking yellow eyebrows and oversized beaks.

Great photo, great hopes for much bird life in the future. Why don't you come on down to NM for the Sandhill Cranes in November or December? I know you have them there, but we have have a Sandhill Crane Festival in November that I'd love to take you to.
