Friday Photo

I took this picture during a previous snow, but in this morning's three or four inches, St Francis and his birds looked even more baffled by what was happening.  In fact, when Gail looked out at him, she said "Doesn't he look like he's saying 'What The F.'?"  And, yes, that's just exactly how he looked.  We all kind of looked like that, as this was entirely unexpected here in town, but quite beautiful and totally gone by about three p.m.

LOL!

I love that St. Francis! I have long wanted a St. Francis for my garden, but haven't been able to find one that didn't look like a concrete refugee from a seventies Catholic sanctuary. Your wood carving is perfect! Did someone make it for you?

Isn't he wonderful? I had seen this carver's work in several stores and galleries in town and loved it, but just couldn't justify spending that much money for a whim. Then, last spring we went to the Placitas Gallery Tour, and one of the galleries selling his work gave us his phone number. He does various santos, and other local kinds of things. We went out to his "studio" in Corrales to talk to him about a Francis for our garden. He is a darling hispanic guy named Hector Rascon, whose studio is a shed in his yard, piled with salvaged wood, carvings in process, cats and dogs, and very good vibes. He did this one for us, and it cost far less than his work in the shops or galleries. Someday I'm going to have him do a San Ysidro, the patron of farming and gardening, for me. I love his simple primitive style, and the humor in his work.
One of our neighbors goes to Portland frequently, drives there. I bet we could get you a St. Francis transported up the road at some point. Talk to me. Email me about this if you want to pursue it, I'll send you my phone number.

Definitely the "hey, it is March, right?" look. Or "got seeds?" :-)

Afraid if he was here in Springfield, he'd be sinking in the mud. Rain, rain, rain, wet birds, wet squirrels, wet weeds.....
